Kevin Armstrong’s “Opera for Heathens” played to sold-out houses at the 2011 Edmonton Fringe Festival. It was called “A beautiful and often electrifying display.” by the Vue Weekly, and “A wonderfully entertaining hour. Five Suns.(out of 5)” by Colin Maclean of the Edmonton Sun. This success, amongst others, is the result of years honing his talents in a myriad ways.
Kevin Armstrong grew up in the richly artistic community of Nelson, British Columbia, where he was exposed to all types of music, visual art and theatre. Kevin started music lessons by age 10, and by college, had already studied classical, jazz and rock guitar, drums and voice.
His classical guitar training came in handy, as he began composing music
for solo guitar and voice with a rhythmic, fingerstyle technique that
allowed him to be the guitarist, bassist and drummer, all on one
instrument. His first release, Untitled 1 (1994) made a splash in the
southern BC interior, selling more than 300 copies, and getting airtime
on local and CBC radio. In 1996, Kevin moved to Montreal to pursue music studies at McGill
University. While completing his Master’s Degree in Opera Performance,
Kevin also released two more albums of original material Second Album
(1997) and Sound Castles (2002). This time he filled out the guitar and
vocal sound with a full band, playing most of the instruments himself.
In summer, 2002, Kevin moved to Zürich, Switzerland, where he did an apprenticeship at the Zürich opera house. There he had the opportunity to perform onstage next to some of the biggest names in the opera word, and his European stage career had begun. Most recently, Kevin performed the role of Pilate in several productions of Jesus Christ Superstar (including the thunerSeespiele, the largest musical festival in Switzerland), as well as opera performances in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and Zürich. Kevin also spent last winter on tour in Austria, Germany and Switzerland with “Night of the Musicals”, Europe’s longest-running musical gala.
Kevin’s latest project, the above-mentioned Opera for Heathens, mixes opera with rock, flamenco, country, and whatever else he feels like. showcasing his versatile and powerful voice with his dexterity on guitar, Kevin is literally a one-man rock opera. from opera arias and newly-arranged musical numbers, to grandiose, vocal-oriented music by the likes of Meat loaf, Queen, Todd Rundgren and Styx. Opera for Heathens is a show not to be missed by any lover of the human voice.
The Motley Cougars are Sherri, Freddie, Laura and Sarah. A power quartet with a unique concept! Play memorable tunes from the past and do them the ‘Cougar Way’. They have been playing together off and on, dare I say it, in different musical projects since the late '80's. Each member shares a love for pop and rock music and brings those influences to the stage.
Their recent collaboration has created a repertoire of some of people's favorite tunes from their past, performed in a clever 'mash up' fashion adding a bit of satire and humor to the production. With the recent addition of Sarah on vocals, the Motley Cougars serve you fresh classics with a bit of a twist!
The Motley Cougars have performed with Australian Artist Mia Dyson at the Wise Hall, Chicks With Picks, and Surrey Pride.
So if you are a fan of 'Classic Rock, Pop, Disco, Grunge and Broadway' tunes, the Motley cougars will entertain you in a very unexpected journey!
